The Seward County Community College baseball team won the Jayhawk
West Conference regular season title after sweeping Pratt Community
College, and Dodge City Community College.
The regular season title lands the Saints with a No. 1 seed
from the Jayhawk West in the NJCAA Division I Region VI Baseball
Tournament. The Saints end the regular season with a 38-16 record,
and ranked No. 10 in the nation.
In the concluding games against Pratt and Dodge City, Freshman
Austin Terhune pitched a one-hit complete-game shutout against
Pratt and picked up a save in the regular season finale against
Dodge City. His performance in those two games landed him the
honor of RINGOR NJCAA Pitcher of the Week.
The No.1 seeding matched Seward County with the No. 8 seed from
the Jayhawk East conference, Neosho County Community College
(23-28).
After losing the first game of the best-of-three series 5-9,
the Saints beat Neosho County 8-7, and 8-2.
Terhune pitched a nine-inning complete game to advance SCCC
to the next round of regionals at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in
Wichita. The Saints (40-17) will face Kansas City Kansas Community
College (31-17), a team that SCCC has not played this year.
KCK enters the eight-team bracket as the Jayhawk East Conference
No. 4 seed after beating Colby Community College, a team that
the Saints split with in conference play.
SCCC will take on KCK in the double elimination tournament at
1p.m. Saturday, May 10. If the Saints win, they will advance
to play the winner of Johnson County/Barton County at 4p.m.
Sunday May 11. If the Saints lose, they will take on the loser
of Johnson County/Barton County at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 11.
