The Seward County Community College Saints have taken over first place in the Jayhawk West Conference after winning 11 straight games.
After starting the season 8-10, the Saints have gone 14-2 and have swept series against perennial conference powerhouses Butler Community College and Barton County Community College. The Saints are currently ranked No. 20 in the NJCAA poll.
Sophomore Michael Drzazga talked about being ranked. “We don’t care about national rankings right now,” Drzazga said.
“All that is on our mind is first, win the conference championship; second, win the region and go to the World Series. As far as rankings go, it doesn’t matter because rankings don’t win championships.”
The Saints are 13-3 in conference play and have a 22-12 overall record.
“It just feels like we are playing like we should,” Drzazga said, “but we still haven’t played as good as what we can play.”
The Saints have been led on the mound by sophomores Tomas Cruz, Jordan McClintick and Christian Kowalchuk.
In conference play, Cruz has gone 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA striking out 30 and only walking two, and has thrown three complete games. McClintick has recorded a 4-0 record with 1 save and 0.00 ERA out of the bullpen. Kowalchuk is 4-0 with a 5.40 ERA with 21 strikeouts.
Offensively freshman Mikel Huston has led the Saints. Since Huston replaced injured Keegan Morrow, he is hitting .667 with 11 RBI and has recorded three stolen bases.
In the four game sweep over Barton County, sophomore infielder Erik Hansen went 6 for 15 with four runs scored, eight RBI and two homeruns.
Fellow sophomore, catcher David Masters went 8 for 15 with three runs scored and five RBI and a homerun.
Seward County head baseball coach Galen McSpadden is just four wins shy of reaching 900 career victories.
McSpadden’s current overall record is 896 wins and 487 losses.
After reaching the 900 career win plateau, McSpadden would join Allen County Community College head coach Val McLean as the only coaches in Region VI history to college more than 900 career wins.
Next up, the Saints have a 4-game series this weekend at Dodge City Community College.
