The Seward County Community College Art Department hosted a
Childrens Art Day in which 24 kids participated.
The event took place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 29 in the
humanities building, and Kylix members volunteered to help along
with Art Instructor Susan Copas.
Children participated in various art stations.
One of their projects was called Mixed Media Collage. This project
required them to cut out shapes with different textures and
to color them using paint, crayons, or markers.
Creativity was the most important element in this activity because
children were to design a collage with whatever colors and shapes
they desired.
Alma Hidalgo, an SCCC student, was in charge of helping the
children with their collage.
I like teaching kids how to see art in different ways,
to be creative, and use their imagination, Hidalgo said.
Fashion Design was another project in which the kids learned
to create visors, necklaces, and handbags.
I made a necklace for my mom, said Mark Kinser,
a participant in the event.
The materials used for this activity were colored foam, beads,
feathers, plastic wire, scissors, and pasting products.
Joshua Diaz, one of the children, said that this project was
one of his favorites.
Children also drew bugs and painted them as part of the Science
Illustrator project.
As part of the Paper Relief Sculpture project, children were
expected to create a scene using construction paper as their
most important material.
They were shown some examples, which included flowers and bugs,
to give them an idea of how to do theirs.
The kids decorated paper sacks in which they saved their projects.
