Seward County Community College’s Board of Trustees approved changes to Southwest Kansas Technical School on April 7. Effective July 1, the school’s name will be changed to Seward County Community College Area Technical School.
According to the consolidation agreement, all current programs will be continued for the next two years. Four of the 12 technical school programs, however, have been placed on probation due to low enrollment. Those programs are Machine Tool Technology, Carpentry, Drafting Technology and Business Administration Technology.
The board also approved a bid for two new boilers and one new chiller that will replace the current units, which were originally purchased in 1972.
New rates for the technical school dorms were also approved. One semester will cost $1,525 with a 19 meal plan. Students living in the dorms will be responsible for telephone, internet and cable bills. Only male students are eligible to live in the SWKTS dorms.
