The agriculture department held its annual Farm Education Day for area students Tuesday.
There were 943 students in attendance at the annual event, ranging in age from preschool to first grade.
The children got the chance to see many different animals used in agriculture, including chickens, rabbits, cows, goats, sheep, a dog, donkeys, pigs, horses, and a llama.
The students were taught about each animal. They also learned about farm safety and about nutrition.
Farm Education day is one of the ways that the agriculture students to get the community involved in their program.
“It’s a way for the ag department to give back to the community and a way for us to better educate young people in agriculture,” Kaylonni Williams said.
Farm Education Day is a highly planned day for the agriculture students. They have to get in touch with local livestock owners to get animals.
“It’s been on the agenda since the beginning of the year,” agriculture student Stephannie Jones said.
This year’s activities were slightly different from former years. There were two different sections so that the students would be separated.
The agriculture students were hoping to lower the amount of congestion and confusion they previously had from all the students moving in the same direction.
Farm Education was a success this year and experienced few problems. The only major setback was when a cow got loose, ran toward the technical school, then started toward the college. The staff and students were able to control the cow without any injuries.
