Winter storms that affected Seward County Community College and its students were common over the holidays.

The Liberal area experienced an ice storm, and the backstop for the SCCC baseball field was damaged.

“The ice built up on it and bent it,” Tom Williams, dean of administration, said.
According to Williams, the backstop was repaired, costing a little over $5,000.
The SCCC cafeteria receives food from places that were hit hard with storms.
According to Jerry Odle, director of food service, some adjustments may be in the works.

“At this time, what oranges and strawberries that are available are of such poor quality that I will no longer serve them,” Odle said. “In addition, since much of the leaf and iceberg lettuces grown in the southwestern regions were frozen, when the quality and availability decline, I will find other options...to keep the salad bar up and running.”

Students traveling over the winter break also encountered stormy weather.
Elliott Alston went to his home in Denver, Colo.

Three storms took place while Alston was there, bringing mostly snow. At one point it snowed for two days straight. Most people stayed at home because of the snow.

“I actually enjoyed it. It’s always fun at first. Then people have to get back to things and are always hurrying to get things done before it starts snowing again,” Alston said.

For those with travel problems and electrical outages, the fun went out of the storms quickly. Student Alyssa Imler of Satanta was out of electricity for two weeks.

“We didn’t have heat or running water,” Imler said.
