The Seward County Community College
softball team began their sixth year of existence with a 1-4 start
to the season at the Midland Tournament Feb. 13-14. The Saints
struggled with their offense during the tournament. They had only
23 hits and four runs in the five games while their opponents
collectively had 32 hits and 21 runs.
Seward
continued their hitting woes against Lamar Community College Feb.
27. In the double header that was played at Lady Saints Field,
which is the softball complex near Brent Gould Field, the Lady
Saints struggled in their first game losing 5-1. Seward County
had only five hits during the game and committed three errors
compared to Lamar's 11 hits and no errors committed. Lamar began
the game with a first inning run and then put two up on the board
in the fourth inning. Sophomore Cherise Pellerin had a double
for the Saints in the fourth inning and was eventually brought
home with an RBI single hit by Sophomore Sarah Moore. The Saints
bats went silent after that as Lamar put two more scores on the
board. In the loss Seward was led by Te Berry, a 5' 4" sophomore
from Canyon, Texas, she went two for three with a double.
In the second game of the double header
the Saints' bats came alive for one of the first times this season
in a 9-4 victory over Lamar, Texas. The Lady Saints batted through
their lineup in the fourth inning while scoring seven of their
nine runs that they had during the game. Seward County had 11
hits and three errors in the game while Lamar had seven hits with
six errors. Freshman Dalila Paredes had a bases clearing triple
scoring three of the seven runs scored in the fourth inning. The
Saints had a barrage of players who were able to put up decent
numbers in the victory. Michelle Reed went two for three with
a run batted in and 2 runs scored, Jennifer Buccola went two for
four with two runs batted in.
Seward is now 2-5 on the season heading
into a 2 p.m. double header Sunday against Cloud County Community
College at Lady Saints Field.
