Basketball at 6,035 feet above sea level

Lady Saints head basketball coach Toby Wynn traveled to Colorado Springs, Colo.,  this summer and stayed at the Olympic Training Center for a week as he worked alongside coach Sue Sylijebeck.

They had the honors of being court coaches of the under 18 USA national basketball team, narrowing  down the roster of 27 women to just 12 elite players during June 7-11.

University of Hartford head coach Jennifer Rizzoti led the national team as head coach while Sue Semrau of Florida State University and Joi Williams of Central Florida University acted as Team USA's assistant coaches.

“It was great getting to work with Rizotti and Williams and having the chance  to talk basketball with them,”  Wynn said.  Rizotti was an assistant coach...

Lady Saints fall in Region VI Championship

Out of character, that would describe the Lady Saints first half against Labette in the Region VI championship. Seward shot five air balls in the first half and shot 24 percent from the field. The Lady Saints were able to battle back. Their national tournament hopes rested on the final 45 seconds with Seward down three. Seward was unable to sink a shot in the time of desperation as their season came to close, falling 54-49."The first half they routed us," Seward assistant head coach Penny Jones said. "We wanted to come out and be aggressive, get after it and take it to them. It was the complete opposite, they were taking it to us."Seward shot out of the gate up 4-0 in the first minute before Labette went on a 15-0 run in seven minutes to...

Spresser sparks Lady Saints into semis

Despite being in Charles Koch Arena at Wichita State University, an all familiar clap was heard in unison with fans in green standing as the final minute of play ticked away in Seward’s second-round matchup with Coffeyville.

A battle in the first half left Seward with a 35-33 lead as they headed into the locker room. The second half Seward needed a spark, and Kendra Spresser provided.

Only eight minutes into the second half, Spresser went on a 10-point shooting spree to help put Seward up 54-41. From there the Lady Saints were able to maintain and come away with an 80-69 win.

“I knew we had to find a way to win,” Spresser said. “And I knew the only way to do that was to be aggressive.”

First round blowout moves Lady Saints on to second round

With nine minutes off the clock in the first half, the Lady Saints had already compiled a 15-point lead, 23-8. From there, the Lady Saints continued to beat on their first-round-regional opponent in Allen County and finished just two shy of the century mark with a 98-56 win.

“I thought our kids played well,” Lady Saints head coach Toby Wynn said. “Offensively we executed really well and we got good opportunites on the offensive end. We shot 54 percent, any time you do that it means you’re getting good opportunities. I thought we made the extra pass and didn’t try to force anything too much offensively. Defensviely, I felt like we did a god job in our gameplan of guarding the people we needed to guard, they way we needed to...
