Saints tennis team travels to regional championship

The Saints tennis team traveled to Shawnee, Okla., this past weekend.

The Saints competed in  three different tennis tournament matches against regional junior colleges and universities.

The men’s tennis team faced and beat last season’s fifth place finisher in the NJCAA tennis tournament, Seminole State College.

The men’s Saints team went 3-0, winning all their matches, while the Lady Saints had a rather rough streak, going 0-3.

Later this week, the Saints tennis team will travel to Oklahoma City on Sept. 30 to compete in the ITA Regional Championships.

 

Saints tennis spins back into action

With a record setting season last year, the Saints tennis team once again returns to the courts. Although the Saints first set of matches were canceled against Hestton, Colo., the tennis team has started this year off with a positive spin. The  tennis tournament of the season was in Wichita, with a winning percentage of 77 percent.

“We  have a great team, they are great players, and I’m really excited about what we can get done this year, ” said tennis coach Darren Workman.

“With four out of the top six returning from last year, it makes this year a little easier,” Workman said.

Tennis captain overcomes language barrier

Winning NJCAA Freshman of the Year last year wasn’t something Fanny Benincasa dreamed of. “I didn’t expect it at all, but it was a good feeling,” Benincasa said. 
Although Benincasa didn’t expect to receive this recognition at the national level, she does consider the award the highlight of her time at Seward County Community College/ Area Technical School.
Benincasa, who is originally from Boudreaux, France, heard of Seward through a recruit.  It was though this recruit that tennis coach Darin Workman heard of Benincasa. “A recruit from France sent me her information and I liked her. She’s been a great student and tennis player,” Workman said.

Lobo builds confidence in English, Saints tennis

Last spring, Saints tennis player Laercio Lobo struggled in interviews as he spoke little English; this year, Lobo eases into interviews and is very confident about both his speech and the Saints tennis team.Lobo’s journey to Seward started with a simple dream.“I had a dream to come to the U.S.,” Lobo said.Although he had this dream, the support for it wasn’t there.  “They told me I didn’t have the money as my family was very poor and I never studied English before,” Lobo said.However, Lobo has now proven his critics wrong as he is attending Seward and has mastered English in a year’s time.Lobo claims overcoming his critics is due to advice his father always gave him.“I lost my dad two years ago and he always told me...

 

Tennis serves to victory

After playing against three of the top nationally ranked teams in the Trojan JuCo Classic in Oklahoma City last Friday and Saturday and then playing against local rival, Barton, in 50 mph wind, on Sunday, the Saints and Lady Saints tennis teams had a busy and tough weekend.Despite this, tennis coach Darin Workman is pleased with both teams.“They were so tired and sore.  I?know they hated it, and they’re probably still mad at me, but I?was proud,”?Workman said.  “It was a very tough weekend but I?was really happy.  We are where I?want to be.”The men’s team won against the eighth ranked team from Meridian Community College 7-2 but lost against Tyler Junior College 7-2 and Collin College 8-1 during the tournament in Oklahoma...
